My Field: Mechanical Engineering

It wasn’t until my junior year when I took AP Calculus and Physics that engineering even became an option. Those two classes were my most enjoyable throughout highschool and I decided that in college I’d want to continue studying math and physics. That led me to do more research about engineering, and with that I realized that I could combine my lifetime love of cars and my favorite high school classes by studying mechanical engineering.

Mechanical engineering is defined to be the discipline that applies engineering physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest disciplines of engineering and is also considered to be the broadest. Some misconceptions about engineers in general is that they work with hard hats or all build bridges but most of the time this is not true.

For me personally, I leaned more towards the automotive division usually encompassed within mechanical engineering. The study of automotive engineering is to design, develop, fabricate, and test vehicles or vehicle components from the concept stage to production stage. With my fondness of math and physics and my fascination of cars I knew that this would be a major I would be passionate about and that my degree would hopefully lead me to get a job that I would enjoy everyday and take pride in.
